Delightful history lesson. I look forward to reading more Templar stories. Anytime a book is based on historical fact as well as we can know it, I appreciate a word from the author on the research, as well as a discussion of where and how the book may deviate from physical events, but also from widespread attitudes of the times. For some reason there were many calendar pages at the end which seem to have been left in by error, but this didn't interfere with the story. Also there were so many quick changes that i did not always know who was doing what where, and when. Would love to see added reminders, phrases, to ground the story in that regard. I recommend these books to everyone!

I enjoy Jeck's books and the characters but found the constant moving between scenes disjointed and hard to follow. Choppy.
Jecks' style is really showing the polish that practice and diligent research can bring. The story is very smooth, with intrigue going on at several different levels. If you want to--or have to--learn the history of 14th-century England, this is the way to do it--a good, gripping tale set against an historically accurate background.
Appreciate being able to find my Michael Jecks book, and book s, and at reasonable prices. The service was excellent, fast and a new book. Will order again from this company.
I love the Templar series. I have read most of them. The early ones are great and the depictions of mideveal life are eye-opening. The later boks which put the knight and the bailiff in with kings and queens is marvelous.
Better and better each and every time. The only thing wrong with these books is, you can't stop reading them. So, nothing else gets done. No ironing, dishes, quilting not even shopping. In fact I must stop now so I may start the next book.
Another solid Jecks' achievement, "The King of Thieves" is one of the darker yarns (and the 26th) in his long-running series of 14th-century murder mysteries, The Knights Templar Mysteries. But the darkness is not gratuitous. It reflects the cruel and rough criminal underworld of early 1300's Paris to which the reader is exposed. Jecks populates "Thieves" some particularly interesting supporting characters, including Jacquot (a criminal), Amelie (a prostitute), Helias (a brothel keeper) and Jean de Poissy (a Parisian prosecutor) who is one of the best supporting characters Jecks has crafted since Sir Baldwin de Furnshill--the main character, our hero and crime-solver--was first called from Devon to Westminster Palace and met the feckless King Edward II and his avaricious confidant Hugh le Despenser (in the 23rd title of the series, "The Dispensation of Death.") What is more, events in this title take dark turns for Bishop Stapleton, too--a major reoccurring character.
Read every book in the series and loved them all. Some are better than others but I fell in love with Sir Baldwin and Bailiff Puttock who are the main characters. They books you some insight into life in Medieval England as well. Mostly accurate in the history although as I've read about the period of Edward II and Edward the III to some extent. The Keeper of the Peace position didn't really come into existence as that title until Edward lll reign which is after the end of the series. Other than that, pretty accurate of the times. Loved most of the plots. They kept you in suspense about who the real killer was until the end although you can follow the characters reasoning through with them to discern what happened and why. I thoroughly enjoyed the series and I am sorry I have no more tales of Sir Baldwin and Bailiff Puttock to read.
