As usual Elton is spit on with his analyses of the woes of what passes for culture. I read this book twelve years after it was published, probably a few more since written. The underlying premise is still accurate, but the plot us somewhat dated.Tags : Popcorn [Ben Elton] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Bruce shoots movies. I throughly enjoyed this book. It's a thrill ride from the beginning and doesn't stop until it's climatic, violent end. Violent is a key word here. I wasn't expecting so much guts and filth, but suprisingly most of it works and gets you to re-think issues of violence in America. This is the central point to the novel and for the most part it's presented in a clear and entertainging way, though I don't agree with all Ben Elton has to say. The idea that film or art causes violence is not a new idea and not much new is said about it here. What Elton has done is to present it in a way that is eaisly accesible (very movie-like), and most importantly, funny. The satire and out right humor are, for the most part, right on. Plenty of times I laughed from recognition of behavior or a joke. You can't help but get involved with these characters and their situations and that's what makes the politics shine. One more thing I must mention is the incredible dust jacket and book design. What a hoot! The only thing it is missing is a popcorn scent in the glue. It looks GREAT on the bookshelf!
My rating and the fact that i didn't finish should not be taken as a bad review of Popcorn. It's not that Ben Elton cannot write, he can, or that the book isn't well written, it is. I was just not in the mood for an all-star cast of shallow narcissists - I just didn't care what happened to any of them no matter what. I had flashbacks of Oliver Stone's film Natural Born Killers - another satire on the idiocy of the media - which is what Popcorn is supposed to be, a true reflection of the empty Hollywood culture, even though the killers here are after the Stones and Tarrantinos of that world. Again, if you're up for that type of tale, this is a good read and Elton is a funny guy.
Bruce Delamitri, director of the ultra-violent movie Ordinary Americans, is on top of the world. He's just won an Oscar for Best Director, and is returning to his palatial mansion with a Playboy centerfold on his arm. What happens next is by turns tragic, humorous, moving, and pathetic, as Bruce's home is invaded by Wayne Hudson and his girlfriend Scout -- ruthless killers whose media profile has risen in step with their skyrocketing body count. Wayne has a plan, and he needs Bruce's help to carry it out. Wayne's scheme ultimately results in murder, mayhem, and the highest ratings in television history.
A satire of television, Hollywood and hot shot autuers like Quentin Tarantino, Popcorn combines elements of movies like Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers and novels such as A. M. Wellman's S.F.W. and Joseph Hayes' The Desperate Hours. Elton has no profound insights about the media or on violence, but he does present all points of view in the debate in an engrossing and deceptively informative manner. He also effectively blurs the edges of reality, often segueing from a screenplay format to more straightforward prose. At times laugh out loud funny, the book makes its points without being heavy-handed. A terrific book, which would probably make a great movie, except for the fact that it skewers the very people most likely to make it.
great fun.
Five star. Fantastic read.
Really entertaining read.
Having loved Ben Elton's television work, I thought I knew what to expect from a novel of his...a lighthearted romp that would have me rolling. I could not have been more wrong.
This novel is not funny. You may chuckle once or twice at some good lines, but it's not funny. It's dark, brooding, and at its heart serious. It's a great satire, poignant and thoughtful. But it's not a comedy by any means.
If you want a good, biting look at Hollywood and its current direction, read the book. But be prepared to think.
